Beesweet, More Than Honey was founded by Ana Pais and Carla Pereira, first cousins, in Loureiro, Oliveira de Azeméis. The starting point was their grandfather, a beekeeper who had produced and sold honey around fifty years earlier and left behind tools and homemade recipes for flavoured honey. Those recipes were already unusual for the way they blended in aromatic herbs.
The project was tested for more than a year before anything reached a shelf. The first products went on sale in August 2014, a limited edition of three 150 gram jars, followed by a smaller three by 40 gram pack. The company has stayed deliberately small, and was described in 2019 as entirely family-run with three employees.
The honey is raw, worked artisanally at low temperatures to preserve the characteristics of the product, and every batch is laboratory analysed. Beesweet does not keep its own hives. It buys from beekeepers, and states as much on its products: the beeswax, for instance, is bought directly from the beekeeper and is not filtered.
The flavoured nectars are the signature, numbered rather than named, from N.88 Fire to N.10 Seasalt and N.66 Beelove. Around them sits a full range of hive products: pure propolis, dehydrated multifloral pollen, royal jelly, beeswax, honeycomb honey and bulk honey. The drop-shaped jar was designed so the honey runs down to the last drop, and their organic products carry the control code PT-BIO-05.
