ChariTea

ChariTea

ChariTea comes out of the same Hamburg project as Lemonaid. In the winter of 2008 the founders quit their jobs and started in a kitchen in St. Pauli, juicing limes, brewing tea and crushing cane sugar. The idea had come to Paul Bethke while he was working in development in Sri Lanka. Since the summer of 2009 the bottling has been handled by a small organic company in the south of Germany.

Every bottle is organic and Fairtrade certified. They pay more for the raw ingredients, and they say plainly that certificates and seals are not enough on their own: they travel to the growing regions every year to see where the ingredients come from and under what conditions.

Five cents from every bottle goes to the Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation, a separate organisation that funds social, economic and ecological projects in the regions the ingredients are grown. Since January 2010 that has raised more than 12 million euros, across 93 projects in seven countries.

The range is iced tea and mate. Black is black tea with lemon juice, Red is rooibos with passion fruit and elderberry, Green is green tea with ginger, honey and lemon. Mate blends mate tea with black tea and citrus juices. The rooibos comes from the Heiveld cooperative in the Northern Cape of South Africa. Everything is sweetened with agave syrup, and there is nothing artificial in the bottle.
